CHANGING VALUES AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

CHANGING VALUES AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT by Benjamin Chuka Osisioma

Values are articulated assertions about normative behaviours - yardsticks used by society in assessing behaviours, attitudes and beliefs to determine their congruence with acceptable norms. They are deep-seated, and constitute force for development and growth in every polity. Professional development on the other hand, is the amplification of the skills, competencies and character traits at the workplace - the guiding beliefs, convictions, principles and precepts that influence an individual’s work behaviour. They are core beliefs that constitute an extension of an individual’s personal values, such as honesty, generosity and helpfulness. Nigeria’s fundamental values include Respect for elders, Honesty and accountability, Cooperation, Industry, Discipline, Self Confidence, and Moral Courage. Professional development can therefore be a veritable instrument for the creation of a new Nigerian citizen who values hard work and who realizes that one cannot have something for nothing.
